>>> 3. If the final cut of your movie is over two hours, you should lose at least 10 minutes. Realistically, let’s make that 15.
There's no reason Anora should be 2h 10m long. Sean Baker won best editing *only* because the Anora team did a great job putting out that trivia item (that he could tie the record for most Oscars won in one night).
This is kind of an ambiguously worded hot take from Olivia! What is the final cut of Anora was over two hours and did lose 10 minutes? What if it was 2hr 20 and he DID cut 10? We'd never know.
I think we did see the true/final cut of Anora. Seems unlikely that producer Sean Baker and his wife teamed up with editor Sean Baker to cut a shorter version that director Sean Baker was unhappy with.
I know the hot takes are a little tongue in cheek, but I genuinely don't get poopooing long movies. Some stories need more time. Some less. Both are lovely! Like, would it really have have been better if Lewis Milestone breezed thru All Quiet on the Western Front in 90 minutes flat? Or compare LA Takedown with Heat (even controlling for cast and budget).
i strongly believe that if your movie needs to be more than 140 minutes, it needs an intermission. bring back intermissions! no movie should realistically be 2h15 mins, cut it down to 2 hours! most things (movies, tv shows) are too long anyway.
Up your tolerance! Wonder Woman (2017) is 140 and it's fine. If you cramstuff an intermission in there it becomes 155, and with all the pre-show crap you're getting close to 180.
i also think the pre-show is too long! should be ten minutes instead of twenty.
but to use your example, i think wonder woman could definitely have used some more cuts. the third act becomes a slog. im not just talking about cutting out scenes already shot, i also mean rewriting to make things more streamlined
I mean, I agree with Olivia that they should cast an unknown for the next Bond, but fancasting famous people is pretty understandable because the non-lazy version of it requires gathering a bunch of unknown actors and having them audition.
Call me a contrarian, but...this isn't Letterbox, sooo...
1) The in theatre experience can be both a blessing (i.e. sublime big screen, big sound!) and a curse (i.e. noisy patrons, smelly/dirty, ridiculously expensive), and want to celebrate the ability to watch movies (and a lot more of them!) at home!
2) Movies should be as long as they need to be. Would't cut a minute out of The Godfather (all of them!), Pulp Fiction, Lawrence of Arabia, The Dark Knight, Dune (1 & 2), Titanic, Avatar,or Die Hard to name a few. I'd suggest bringing back the intermission, but the lenght of the movie likely isn't the main "issue" with movies.
and FWIW, The early Spielberg series has been one of the best, most entertaing and fun of the Blank Check cannon. They joy and appreciation is what I truly lobve about Blank Check! Just perfection!
I think with all art you should ask yourself “what is this trying to communicate to the audience, is it successful, and is it necessary?” I am a sub-amateur writer, but I love creating a bloated mess and then cutting it to the bone. I think a lot of filmmakers try to justify things being included rather than wondering if they need to be there. That’s why Die Hard works so well. Every piece of that thing reveals something useful or sets up a payoff
10. Fancasting James Bond is boring but at least there's a character already in place. Nothing is dumber than all those "Fan theories about White Lotus season 4 cast" articles I was seeing on Apple News a week or two ago.
They're really abusing the word "theory" there. TWL season 4 is imaginary for now! There's no Book 4 to draw from. People just name actors they like, usually people already known for other streaming/cable shows, and some poor blogger is forced to compile their choices.
1. I've read nothing but "bad behavior in movie theaters" articles for three years now. Just go to the expensive AMC Boston Common 19 (in the Theatre District)! Or whatever your local equivalent is. No riff-raff to speak of.

That was Conclave's Oscar. That thing *moves*.

I think The Brutalist was incredibly snubbed for editing, it was the only one nominated where the editing truly made the film work
What podcast is David discussing The Shadow on?

I've been ringing that #10 bell for years! It's so silly and lazy imaginations when people fancast a famous person!
And THANK YOU for #8. It feels like people have already decided Superman will be bad, because everyone is allergic to sincerity.

How sincere is James Gunn's version of sincerity?

For Superman II, will both versions be discussed?
